The film stars the voice of James Corden as the title character, alongside Rose Byrne, Domhnall Gleeson, and Sam Neill in live-action roles, and the voices of Daisy Ridley, Elizabeth Debicki, and Margot Robbie. The film was released on February 9, 2018, and grossed 351 million worldwide. A sequel is set to be released on April 3, 2020. Plot [ edit] In England's Lake District, Peter Rabbit, his cousin Benjamin Bunny, and triplet sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, spend most of their days picking on old Mr. McGregor and stealing vegetables from his garden. They are friends with a local woman named Bea who spends her time painting pictures of the rabbits as well as the surrounding nature. Bea took on a motherly role with the rabbits after their mother's death. Their father had been killed and eaten in a pie by McGregor when they were still young. One day, Peter is forced to leave his jacket in McGregor's garden and goes back to retrieve it. However, it was a trap set by McGregor who catches him, but suddenly dies of a heart attack due to decades of unhealthy eating habits. Enthralled, Peter invites all of the local animals and takes over McGregor's manor. Meanwhile in London, McGregor's great-nephew, Thomas McGregor, an uptight, controlling workaholic, works at the toy department of Harrods department store where he waits for a promotion to associate general manager. He indifferently accepts the news about his great-uncle's death, someone he was completely unaware of, but is infuriated over losing the promotion to a lazy nephew of the managing director and is fired for losing his temper. His now-former manager encourages him to get a hobby and spend some time in the country. When Thomas learns that his great-uncle's manor is valuable and that he's inherited it, he decides to appraise and prepare it for resale in order to start his own toy store to get even with his former employers. He kicks out Peter and the animals and begins to upgrade the security of the garden wall and gates, despite Bea's objections. When Peter and a reluctant Benjamin sneak back into the garden, Thomas catches the latter and attempts to drown Benjamin in a river, but hesitates. Benjamin's relatives rescue him; Thomas instead accidentally drops a prized set of binoculars that Bea had given him earlier, forcing him to retrieve it. Thomas and Bea end up falling in love with each other, which causes Peter to become jealous and determined to separate them. Peter and Thomas start a war with each other by setting traps and other offensive nuisances. Things get out of hand when Peter rewires an electric fence set up by Thomas, prompting Thomas to throw dynamite in Peter's burrow. After the rabbits trigger Thomas' allergy to blackberries, Thomas attacks them in the garden with some of the dynamite and tells Peter that his antics caused him to become aggressive. When Peter detonates the dynamite to prove to Bea that Thomas was using it, he ends up blowing up the burrow, which causing the tree on top to crush Bea's art studio. Bea ignores Thomass explanation of the rabbits' involvement and breaks up with him. Thomas goes back to London to work at Harrods again. Peter feels remorseful for what he has done, and upon learning that Bea intends to leave the neighborhood, he and Benjamin head to London to bring Thomas back. Tricking Thomas into thinking he was imagining the rabbits ability to talk, Peter apologizes and encourages Thomas to follow his heart. They rush back to the country, where Peter shows Bea the detonator and presses it for her to see; thus confirming Thomas previous claims that the rabbits were responsible for the explosion. Peter and Thomas apologize to Bea and plead for her not to move away. Wishing to remain with Bea, Thomas no longer wants to sell the manor; but they discover an unpleasant wealthy couple (who Thomas had encountered earlier and been tormented by) had already bought the house and finalized the sale. Peter, his family and friends use their tricks to force the couple out of the house, allowing Thomas and Bea to move back in. Thomas and Bea resume their relationship, and he allows the wildlife to take food from the garden within reason. Peter and his family restore the burrow and the yard with Thomas and Bea's help. Thomas sets up his own toy shop in the village, where Bea showcases her paintings of the rabbits. [21] Trailer criticism [ edit] The first trailer received negative feedback from critics and fans of the character, many of whom labelled the film as being too modern and insulting to Beatrix Potter's works. Collider called the trailer "garbage" and a "low brow 'comedy' cringe fest. 22] Stuart Heritage from The Guardian stated that "the Peter Rabbit film looks like the result of some blisteringly inept manhandling. there's something genuinely harrowing about the sight of Peter Rabbit – gentle, Edwardian Peter Rabbit – thoughtlessly injuring some birds, or grabbing a pile of lettuce leaves and making it rain like a banker in a strip club, or literally twerking" and argued "there is no way on Earth that [Beatrix Potter would] have ever given the green light to a slow motion car crash like this. 23] Metro writer James Baldock found that the trailer was "so gut wrenchingly bad" and that "if the movie lives up to its two minute preview – [it] is set to be the greatest abomination to grace the big screen since The Emoji Movie. He finished by writing "Listen carefully, and you can just about hear the sound of Beatrix Potter, turning furiously in her grave. 24] On November 7, a new trailer for the United Kingdom was released. [25] Home media [ edit] The film was released on digital platforms on April 20, 2018. A Blu-ray and DVD and 4K followed on May 1, 2018. [34] Olly Richards at Empire gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, praising the "splendid" animation and Gleeson's performance, though he felt that the 40-year old Corden had been miscast. [35] Chris Nashawaty at Entertainment Weekly gave the film a 'B' grade, saying it was "clever, and funny, and moves as fast as a tyke on a sugar bender" noting its differences with the source material. [36] Robbie Collin at The Daily Telegraph gave it 2 out of 5 stars, praising the "appealing double act" of Gleeson and Byrne but comparing the film unfavourably to Paddington and criticising the characterisation of Peter Rabbit. [37] Susan Wloszczyna on gave it 2 out of 4 stars, agreeing that Peter "goes from likably cheeky chap to sneering sadist. 38] Controversy [ edit] In the first week after the film's release, groups in multiple countries criticized it for "allergy bullying" and called for an apology from Sony. The accusations focused on a scene where Thomas McGregor — whose character has a known severe allergy to blackberries — is pelted with the berries until one enters his mouth, causing him to enter anaphylactic shock and grab for his Epipen. [39] 40] 41] In response, Sony published a statement saying "We sincerely regret not being more aware and sensitive to this issue, and we truly apologize. 42] In his review, Robbie Collin said. is a horrible scene – not because allergies are comedically untouchable, but because it makes Peter an irredeemably nasty piece of work. 37] Accolades [ edit] Sequel [ edit] Sony is developing a sequel set to be released on April 3, 2020. Gluck will return to write and direct the film. [45] Unlike the first film, however, Sony Pictures Animation will not be involved, since The Angry Birds Movie. clarification needed] References [ edit] filmmusicreporter (September 5, 2017. Barnabas: I was best friends with your dad. My names Barnabas. Youre a fierce bad rabbit, just like him. Book Store Client: Where are the rabbits? Bea: Back in their burrow, snug as a bug in a rug. Peter Rabbit: I would never put you in danger. I promise. [Mopsy, Flopsy and Cotton-Tail give him a skeptical look] Peter Rabbit: Okay, I cant promise. Were going to go and rob this place. Are you in, or are you out? after Mopsy, Flopsy and Cotton-Tail get caught stealing from the farmers market] Peter Rabbit: No! Let them go! My family is in trouble, and Im going to get them back. Sony announced on Friday night that they would indeed be producing a sequel to their breakout hit Peter Rabbit. Helmed by Will Gluck and starring Rose Bryne and Domhnall Gleeson and the vocals of James Corden, Daisy Ridley, Elizabeth Debicki and Margot Robbie, Sony Animation's Peter Rabbit was the closest thing we've had this year to a hit animated flick, with the important caveat that it's half-live action. The charming and mostly pleasant kid-friendly remake of Wes Anderson's Rushmore earned a huge 4. 58x multiplier from its 25m Fri-Sun debut in early February. The 50 million-budgeted fantasy earned 114m domestic, essentially becoming the only real domestic champion in 2018 (save for arguably Game Night and I Can Only Imagine) between Black Panther and Ready Player One as T'Challa smushed a deluge of would-be event movies and left Hollywood waiting on China to save them. Oh, and with 55. 7m in the UK, it is Sony's biggest non-007 release ever in said territory, helping the flick nab 326. 7m worldwide with South Korea and Japan coming this month. Of note, it's another example of how much of the alleged controversies surrounding one "problematic" element of a movie or another don't have much of an impact on the major studio releases. That's a conversation for another day, but I would argue that the media's focus on this kind of thing only hurts smaller movies, especially smaller movies from "not a white guy" filmmakers that tend to face an uphill battle anyway. Families who wanted to see Peter Rabbit did so despite the controversy. And all of the handwringing about Age of Ultron three years ago didn't stop the movie from earning 459 million domestic and 1. 4 billion worldwide. But the focus on controversies, often from folks who haven't seen the films in question, do real damage to smaller, less conventional fare like Tully. While I would have preferred that the superior Paddington 2 be the big family-targeted blockbuster of early 2018, I won't penalize the merely good Peter Rabbit because audiences comparatively ignored (40 million domestic and 223m worldwide) the superb Paddington 2. Heck, I would still argue that Sony would be wise, if the stars align (Warner Bros. /Time Warner Inc. picked up the domestic rights to Paddington 2 after The Weinstein Company imploded) to distribute a theoretical Paddington 3. The successes of Goosebumps, Peter Rabbit and (especially) Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle show a studio that can offer live-action, kid-targeted multiplex fare that falls between the Pixar/Illumination animated flicks and the mega-budget, four-quadrant fantasy blockbusters. There is an audience for these kinds of unapologetic "kiddie movies. especially if they are closer in quality to Peter Rabbit than The Smurfs. And a Sony that finds a way to successfully sell kid-flicks (live-action or otherwise) and adult-skewing thrillers like Sicario 2 or Equalizer 2 is one that won't have to rely on Spider-Man to save the day every couple of years. Come what may, Peter Rabbit 2 opens Feb. 7, 2020, in North America and March 27, 2020 in the U. K. Maybe we can hope for a Paddington cameo to set up the "adorable CGI animals" cinematic universe that we all crave.
MOVIES 6:29 PM PDT 5/4/2018 by Courtesy of Sony Pictures 'Peter Rabbit' Sony has dated the movie that will bring back director Will Gluck. Peter Rabbit will be up to his old tricks again, and hopefully bring in more lettuce for Sony Pictures. Off the surprise success of the CG/live-action hybrid film Peter Rabbit, Sony has announced its intent to make a sequel, dating the next installment for Feb. 7, 2020. (The movie will open March 27, 2020, in the U. K. ) Will Gluck, who directed the first pic, will return to write and direct the follow-up. Peter Rabbit, which saw James Corden voice the popular character from the Beatrix Potter books and also starred Domhnall Gleeson, proved to be an under-the-radar hit when it was released Feb. 9. The movie grossed 115 million in the U. S. and was, per Sony, the studios biggest-ever non-James Bond film in the U. K., with a 55. 7 million gross there, where it held the No. 1 spot for four weeks in a row. The pic grossed 325 million worldwide. Peter Rabbit went after the same audience as Paddington 2, another CG/live-action movie that was based on an iconic British literary property. Paddington 2 has a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Peter Rabbit has a 62 percent score, but, as Sony boasted in its announcement, Peter Rabbit surpassed the lifetime tally of both Paddington movies. (Despite universal acclaim, Paddington 2 made only 40 million in the U. and 225 million worldwide. ) Sony also dated its thriller Escape Room for Nov. 30 of this year, and moved up an untitled animated film produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller from Feb. 7, 2020, to Jan. 10, 2020.

Sony has released a new trailer for Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway. This serves as a follow-up to the surprise 2018 hit, with James Corden returning as the voice of Peter Rabbit and Domhnall Gleeson back as Mr. McGregor. This new trailer gives us a good look at what to expect from the sequel. In broad terms, it appears they've decided to go the Babe: Pig in the City route by taking a farm animal away from the comfort of his home and thrusting him into the big city with a bunch of new animal friends. The latest Peter Rabbit 2 trailer opens up with an extended sequence that sees Peter and his rabbit pals feeling a bit hungry on the road, which leads to our main character taking a bite out of a less-than-fresh apple. If you'll excuse the pun, it's low hanging fruit as far as humor goes, but is to be expected when looking at a kid's movie about a talking rabbit. Before long, we get to the heart of the matter which sees the fuzzy little creatures heading out on their own to town in search of greener pastures. In this case, a farmer's market, where they intend to steal all they can possibly eat. Peter Rabbit proved to be a bigger-than-expected hit. Made for a budget of 50 million, it grossed 351 million at the global box office. The family-friendly movie did well enough with critics as well, as these things go, currently sitting at a 64 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As such, a sequel became a priority for the studio. Will Gluck returns to the director's chair for the sequel. Gluck co-wrote the screenplay alongside Patrick Burleigh ( It Was a Pug Day.
